THREAT TO AMATEUR VHF/UHF BANDS... Perhaps you have already heard that a new proposed low Earth orbit satellite service (LEO) has applied to the FCC to obtain some spectrum under 1 GHz. Included in the list of bands to be studied includes the amateur 2m and 440 bands. There have been many rumors circulating, but at the moment it appears that these bands are simply "under study". The industry seems to think that the spectrum could be shared with hams, pending the results of the study. But just to be on the safe side, it's still a good idea to file comments with the FCC on this matter, which would be brought up at the World Radio Conference (WRC) in 1997. All comments must be made a part of the public record. The FCC is asking that comments to submitted to Office of the Secretary, Federal Communications Commission, Washington, DC 20554, or by electronic mail at wrc97@fcc.gov. The FCC is no longer accepting e-mail about this matter at its NORMAL address. Any comments made by e-mail should be sent to wrc97@fcc.gov and not to any other address. Comments should reference the Advisory Committee public record file "Reference No. ISP-96-005". Filing comments directly to the Chair of the WRC-97

Committee, Informal Working Groups, individual FCC staff members, and private sector participants should NOT be made, in order to maintain effeciency. For more information, contact Cecily C. Holiday, Federal Officer of the WRC-97 Advisory Comm., or Damon C. Ladson, the alternate officer, at (202) 418-0749, or consult the Internet home page at http://www.fcc.gov/ib/wrc97/

THE NEXT MEETING OF THE INDIANA REPEATER COUNCIL is at the Indianapolis hamfest at 1 pm on Saturday, July 13. The problems from within the council have increased in recent days. This meeting will be very important for the future of repeater coordination in Indiana, as well as the current operation of many repeaters in Indiana. A new proposed set of by-laws are being considered that are completely different from those that have been in place in the past. The election of officers for the next 3 years will also occur. All are invited to attend.
